Sigma Delta FAQs
What does it mean to be a multicultural sorority?
As a multicultural sorority, we accept members of all cultural backgrounds. Our Founding Mothers were all Latin-American women but they created Sigma Delta with the purpose of celebrating multiculturalism.
How can I let Sigma Delta know I am interested in them?
During the Formal Recruitment period (Beginning of every Spring semester):
Does Sigma Delta have a house?
No, Sigma Delta does not have a house. This gives our sisters more financial freedom if they want to be Resident Assistants, go on Co-op, or study abroad. Not having a house keeps our membership dues low and relieves our sisters of any housing related financial stress. Just because we don't have a house doesn't mean sisters don't live together. Many sisters end up renting apartments off campus and enjoy living together.
What are Sigma Delta's values?
We have five main pillars that we focus on:
Are you a national sorority?
No, we are a local sorority. This means that we are the only Sigma Delta chapter. Sigma Delta was founded in 1996, by 10 Latin-American women at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
What is Sigma Delta's relationship with the Rensselaer Panhellenic Association?
We are an associate member.
What is Sigma Delta's philanthropy?
We have the freedom to choose any philanthropy to support because we do not have a national organization governing us. This allows us to support our sisters on issues that they are individually passionate about. We listen to what our sisters are passionate about and vote on which cause to commit ourselves to. In 2016, our sisters felt strongly about supporting the LGBTQ+ community after the Pulse shooting, so we raised money for the OneOrlando Fund.
There are some causes that we support every year and don't change. For example, we have been continuously donating to Sponsor-A-Child for many years.
Why is your process different? Why don't you participate in all of Primary Recruitment?
We want you to have a good impression of Greek life and make your experience is a positive one. We like to spend more time getting to know you personally through recruitment event we hold after the Primary Recruitment process.
We want to assure that not only are you a good fit for us, but that we can be a good fit for you.
What are the benefits to having a small house?
Our house cap is 25 members. This allows us to have incredible bonds as sisters and gives each sister in our house the ability to hold multiple positions throughout their time with us. These leadership opportunities helps us grow professionally and become excellent communicators.
What organizations are the Current Sisters involved with?
Our colors Cream, Burgundy, and Forest Green and our mascot is the Butterfly.
How many sisters do you currently have?
We recently reactivated on campus with the initiation of three active sisters and are looking for more! We also have over fifty alumnae supporting us.
What are your dues?
Our semester dues are $165.00 and that goes towards sisterhood bonding events and recruitment.
