HistoryLa Sociedad de Damas, Sigma Delta Sorority, Incorporated was established on April 12, 1996 with the purpose of promoting basic values such as honesty, compassion, self-pride, professionalism, and hard work among college women.
Founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York by 10 undergraduate women, La Sociedad de Damas, recognizes the importance of self-development as a way to move towards creating a respectable and responsible image of our people. The essence of the Founders' vision is to encourage our sisters to grow inwards and outwards: Grow inwards as human beings, by finding their own moral objectives, and their own way to accomplish their goals without compromising what is important to them. Outwards, by educating themselves, serving as role models, and reaching to those in need with all the help they can muster. Once incorporated by the State of New York as a nonprofit organization on March 29th, 1996 and after going through an application process, Sigma Delta Sorority became the first Latin-based sorority to be recognized as an associate member of the Panhellenic Association on the Rensselaer campus. In November 8th, 1999, Sigma Delta acquired voting privileges in Panhel. As of May 19th, 2020, with the initiation of the Alpha Epsilon line, Sigma Delta is now active on campus again.
By promoting the understanding and sisterhood of women of all ethnic and religious background, Sigma Delta Sorority establishes lifelong friendships among the sisters, building bridges across the Americas and the World. |
